Overview:
Bike&Rail in the Kyll Valley
The Kyll Valley Cycle Route extends the whole length of the Eifel region from Dahlem to Trier, the oldest town in Germany. Because it runs parallel to the Cologne-Trier railway line, there is an easy way for you to return to where you started. The long-distance route passes numerous castles as it follows the twists and turns of the River Kyll through the various parts of the region. Beginning in the northern Eifel, you cycle past reservoirs, lakes and those that fit both descriptions, such as the Lake Kronenburg. It's then on through the ancient volcanic landscapes of the Vulkaneifel, followed by the meadow orchards and rugged rock formations in the southern Eifel and the countryside outside Bitburg. A real insiders' tip is the Limestone Eifel Cycle Route, which runs 20 kilometres from Hillesheim to Ahrdorf and links the Kyll Valley Cycle Route with the Ahr Valley Cycle Route.

Recommended for families: the new Kids' Cycle Route is a short (approx. 20km) section of the Kyll Valley Cycle Route with virtually no uphill or downhill stretches. Along the way, Biggi Biene, Elli Eule, Freddi Fledermaus and Willi Basalt serve up fun and adventure at numerous playgrounds and rest areas.

Alternative routes and shortcuts:
The Limestone Eifel Cycle Route links the valleys of the River Kyll and the River Ahr. It crosses the watershed of the Rhine and Moselle along the way and opens up a much larger region for extended or circular tours. The cycle path runs predominantly along a disused railway line and is almost completely level as a result; there is only one short climb to negotiate as you leave Hillesheim.Links to the wider cycle network:
The Kyll Valley Cycle Route is the major north-south connection through the Eifel region. You can break off towards North Rhine-Westphalia at Hallschlag, switch routes to Luxembourg at Bitburg-Erdorf or make your way to Koblenz and the Saale Cycle Route from Ehrang – where the Kyll flows into the Moselle.Signposting:

Terrain:
This 115km cycle route is particularly suitable for families because of its level to gently rising profile. The section between Kyllburg and Erdorf is the only one with a steep ascent, and even this can be avoided by taking the train. The altitude variation is 547 metres from north to south (towards the Moselle) and 915 metres in the opposite direction (towards North Rhine-Westphalia).The route at a glance:
